Marinas store boats, dispense fuel, and provide boat-related amenities. Marinas typically have a boat painting area where bottom painting is done. The paints usually contain anti-bio-fouling chemicals such as heavy metals (copper, lead, etc.). Paint wastes can discharge to the adjacent ground if adequate precautions are not taken.
Many marinas dispense gasoline and diesel and have above-ground or underground fuel storage facilities. Discharges of fuel would be addressed in the same manner as Gas Stations.
Many marinas conduct service on motors and engines. Petroleum products could discharge to the surrounding ground from the work area.
Boatyards can be associated with marinas or are used only for the storage and maintenance of boats. Often, individual boat owners conduct painting and maintenance activities on their boats. The surface is usually unpaved and consists of gravel, rock, or bare dirt. There is usually no designated area for these activities, and surface staining of the ground in numerous locations is common. Some boatyards maintain fuel storage facilities, and impacts should be addressed in the same manner as Gas Stations and industrial facilities with fuel tanks.
If contamination issues are unknown or unresolved, a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment on the marina or boatyard involving soil and groundwater testing should be conducted.
