Auto salvage yards store junk cars and sell parts from those cars. Many have service or paint & body shops, and the concerns associated with Auto Repair and Paint & Body Shops would apply.
Auto salvage yards store gasoline, diesel, and waste oil in tanks.
A particular concern about salvage yards are the crushing facilities. The crusher compresses vehicles into a small cube or flattens them for easy transport. Often gas tanks and crankcases are not drained prior to crushing, and significant amounts of petroleum are present in the ground in the area of the crusher. Also, the crusher may be moved to different locations on the property.
Surface discharges are often present in numerous areas where the vehicles are parked.

If contamination issues are unknown or unresolved, a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment on the salvage yard involving soil and groundwater testing should be conducted.
